Narrowing of the spinal canal

Narrowing of the spinal or vertebral canal is called spinal stenosis. It is either congenital or acquired, e.g. from diseases of the skeleton or through injuries. In most cases, however, spinal stenosis is caused by degeneration, which leads to changes of the vertebral discs, enlargement of the small facet joints and thus to the reduction of the diameter of the canal. Because of the pressure on the nerves and compression of the veins pain is felt, that irrradiates into both legs and can hinder the patient from walking.
